Typically I begin my match writeups by talking first about the formation and tactics utilized by City, today Id like to start by looking at Pep Guardiolas philosophies in a broader sense. Fair warning, this post is 6, 500 words long, nearly double the length of my typical writeups, so make sure to wait till your boss is busy with something else before ignoring your work to do something you'll actually enjoy. If you want my quick thoughts on the Villa match, please feel free to head over to my Youtube account and listen to my recap. 1) How Guardiola Creates Space In The Attacking Third By Utilizing Overloads, Depth and Width. “H ow the bloody hell are you supposed to score when your opponent has eight men in the box? ” One thing thats always fascinated me about the way Guardiola views the game - and forgive me because I havent read any of the books about him and I know I should - is that he seems to view the game as a riddle to be solved. And one of the key questions asked of his possession-based style of play is how to create space in areas of the pitch where there is so little. In the attempt to answer that I think its important to first consider how football has been traditionally approached. For most managers the game is thought of in two keys ways: defense and attack. In defense, the basic axiom is that one should remain compact, and maintain your defensive shape, and in so doing, force your opponents to try and beat you from the wide areas. In attack, the goal is to get the ball forward as quickly as possible before the defense can set itself into the aforementioned compact shape, and beat defenders as they caught in retreat. This is the basis of all counter-attacking football, and its sound theory thats been comprehensively tested over the decades and proven its worth. Centerbacks should be big and powerful, capable of winning headers and bodying off smaller attacking players. Strikers should be efficient poachers who can serve as target men capable of holding up play in transition. Wingers should be fast and able to exploit the channels. While I cannot speak for the man, I think it's fair to say that Pep does not see this game this way. Rather, it has occurred to me for some years now that he sees the pitch as a dynamic plane of vertical and horizontal space. Length and width, if you will. There are two ways to view space. The first is through a definable standard, in the case of football we can do that by observing the size of the pitch. Whilst UEFA has a standard pitch dimension of 115 yards by 74 yards, there is no universal standard for pitch dimensions, only guidelines set forth by each nation/league/competition that set the upper and lower bounds for length and width. If you assume a club utilizes the UEFA standard, as City do at the Etihad - that gives you 8, 510 square yards of space within which to work. The second way to view space within the game, and the more relevant one as it pertains to this discourse, is to accept that space is amorphous. We can define space on the two planes, horizontal and vertical. Whilst in possession, the vertical space is roughly defined by your deepest lying center back and your opponents deepest lying centerback. These are invisible vertical boundaries that constrain the movements of attacking players from both sides - the offside demarcation. The other is horizontal, and can roughly be defined as the space from your widest players on either flank. These lines are of course, flexible. In possession you can play the ball back all the way to your goal keeper, or out to the full width of either touchline, for example. For a Guardiola managed team that so frequently maintains possession in the opponents half, that total area can very quickly be halved, or in the attacking third nearly quartered depending on how high the backline presses and how wide theyre able to drag the opposing defense. As the space within which you are trying to play compresses, the density of the defense (mathematically we could define it as defenders per square yard) increases on a linear scale. Early in the season, as City played the majority of their matches with inverted fullbacks, and wingers who needed to cut inside to be impactful, their attacking formation would often look something like this as the ball entered the final third. Opposing sides, often playing in a 5-3-2 defensive formation, that would become a 5-4-1, or even a 6-3-1, were able to compress eight or nine defenders into very small areas, which made passing lanes scarce, and allowed defenders to easily be able to recover to other players. City's wide players, predominantly Raheem Sterling, and Riyad Mahrez, were often left to struggle while double-marked as teams were instructed to either leave City's inverted fullbacks - typically Kyle Walker and Oleksander Zinchenko - either loosely marked, or entirely unmarked. City's attacks often became congested without inverted wingers keeping the width early this season. As a result, even though City continued to score goals, the fluid movements, and ability to break teams down and score The Standard City Goal dried up. Increasingly City's attack devolved into passing around The Horseshoe (around the periphery of the oppositions deep-block) and whipping in speculative crosses that were all too often easily cut out by some combination of the oppositions superior numbers or superior size. This brings us back to the original question of how to create space within which to attack, when the very philosophy you want to utilize inherently removes it. In other words, “ how the bloody hell are you supposed to score when your opponent has eight men in the box? ” Limiting this disquisition to an examination of his City tenure, there are two chief ways in which Pep has gone about this. In seeking to create a pitch thats as wide as possible, Guardiola has generally sought to play his wingers as close to the touchline as possible while, as weve discussed in previous writeups, having those wingers be of a footedness that matches their touchline (left footed players on the left, for example. Typically hes done that within the confines of his trusted 4-1-2-3 formation, though in the past month hes increasingly utilized his fullbacks to fulfill that role. In doing so, he forces an opposing side to defend the widest possible area. This is an example of how City looked during the Everton match in City's 3-4-2-1 formation as it transitioned into 2-3-4-1 in attack. Having fullbacks that are a threat to cross makes the pitch much wider City may still need to play through eight defenders, but those defenders are spread over a much wider area, and because of the play making ability of the fullbacks, they have both more angles from which to attack, as well more space within which to play. Opposing defenses can no longer simply ignore the inverted fullbacks in possession and double up on the wingers as they did earlier in the season. The other way hes done it is by reinventing what a given players vertical positional responsibility is. Take for example, Kevin De Bruyne. One of the very first things Guardiola did upon arriving at Manchester City was to reinvent what his Belgian playmaker could be. Throughout his career De Bruyne had been primarily been utilized as an advanced playmaker - a number ten. He could also be found on the wings, especially during his tenure with VfL Wolfsburg. But the Catalan envisioned him playing deeper, and being given license to roam the pitch. This has perhaps been more true this season than ever before. Theres an old truism in coaching circles that you should try and play your best players in the most advanced parts of the pitch possible. If Guardiola has ever been told that, its clearly a concept that never resonated. Whether it was during his tenure with Barcelona, and his use of Lionel Messi as a false nine, or here at City, Pep has instead adopted the philosophy of getting his best player onto the ball as often as possible, in as much space as possible. Position on the pitch be damned. By giving his central players not only license, but indeed responsibility to rotate not only forward, but backward, he manipulates the pitch. Most defensive concepts are built upon the idea of zonal marking. Ive touched on the idea before, but the basic concept is simple: each defender has a zone of responsibility on the pitch, and its his job to mark whoever enters that zone. Zonal marking assignments for Everton's players during their recent matchup with City would've looked something like this. Defenders must also be able to react to overloads, shifting their zonal responsibilities as the ball moves from left to right, and from back to front - or vice verse. Managers can also opt to man-mark specific players in an attempt to try and limit the ability of one or more players to receive the ball in space, or at all. By giving his more central players freedom to roam, Guardiola creates defensive confusion. When De Bruyne drops deep to receive the ball, or swing out wide (or both. defenders are forced to try and quickly determine exactly whos role it is to step out. And typically, when that defender vacates his zone, someone else will step into the vacated area. This is what's referred to as rotational movement, and City do this all around the pitch. When the passes and movement are executed with pace and precision, it can cause havoc, as defenders struggle to quickly identify and communicate exactly who is responsible for whom. By dragging defenders out of position, and into either deeper, or wider areas - or ideally, both - what he is really doing is creating open spaces either ahead of play, or through the middle of the pitch. That provides Citys more advanced attackers moments where they can exploit advantageous attacking situations against the fewest number of defenders, in the greatest amount of space possible. This is example from yesterday's match highlights how Guardiola has increasingly utilized De Bruyne from deeper and deeper areas to create attacking opportunities. In the 16th minute City press high and force a turnover in Villa's half. As City win the ball, De Bruyne drops deep into the right channel to pick up the ball from Rodri. As De Bruyne utilized the vertical space by dropping deep, David Silva rotated into the area he vacated in the more advanced right-channel. Jesus in turn runs into the wide open space in the middle of the pitch that Silva had occupied moments earlier, which has been left completely unmanned. This is an example of the concept of rotational movement we addressed slightly earlier in this piece. The marking assignments are generally correct - Villa have six defenders to mark six City players - but because of City's press, many aren't in quite the right positions, and they're about to be caught out as De Bruyne chooses between playing through Jesus, who's running through the middle of the pitch in plenty of space, or David who has subtly drifted in a pocket of space between Tyrone Mings (40) and Danny Drinkwater (4. Ultimately he chooses to play through David and as the pass reaches him in space, he's free to turn and run at the defense. This is where we see the impact of width and depth. Because Neil Taylor (3) is late trying to recover his position after his foray forward while Villa were trying to get out, Kortney Hause (30) has to fill his assignment, coming wide to mark Mahrez. Conceptually he's done the right thing, but he (and Villa's backline) would've probably been better served had he left Mahrez unmarked, as City are about to exploit the gap that width has provided. What had been a compact Villa defense has been drawn both out of the area, and off to the side, and as David takes possession, City have an opportunity to attack in a three v two. David, left with a pair of tantalizing passing options ultimately plays in Aguero who tries to take one of his patented tight-angle shots, but gets his footing all wrong goes down in a heap without getting the shot away. Moments like these are fleeting, and often times defenses are able to recover in time to prevent City from getting a shot away. Creating these chances requires players who have both an innate sense of space, the flexibility to play almost anywhere on the pitch, and who move very intelligently. Exploiting them requires those players to execute with both precision and pace. When it comes off, it can make a good defense look bad, and leave a line of neutrals on r/soccer wondering just how and why teams are always so bad when defending City. Though this particular move comes to nothing, it's a fantastic example of how Pep has found ways to reimagine what the pitch can look like, and found ways to beat teams even when they try and sit deep. I dive into this move more in a video exclusively available on my Patreon that'll be available to my supporters tomorrow. 2) City Return to the 4-1-2-3 It feels like forever since we last saw City forming up in a their tried and true 4-1-2-3 formation, but today we finally had an opportunity to see not only the formation, but perhaps something like what the formation wouldve always been had players like Benjamin Mendy not suffered serious injuries in back-to-back seasons, or City not struggled for defensive solidarity this season. With Pep opting to play both Joao Cancelo, and Mendy as fullbacks in a system with only two centerbacks, we had an opportunity to get a glimpse of what couldve been, and may still come to be. Instead of playing either Cancelo or Mendy in inverted roles, nor choosing to rotate additional midfielders deep to assist Rodri, Pep showed us perhaps his most attacking setup of the season, as City's transitional 4-1-2-3 became a 2-1-4-3 as City moved into Villa's half. Ultimately though they originate from different defensive and transitional formations, the attacking shape in this match rather closely resembled the one that Guardiola used in City's 2-1 victory over Everton on New Year's day. That it came one match after Pep gave us what was likely his most defensive setup of the season - a match in which he kept both his fullbacks deep, played with a two man defensive midfield, and opted to play without a recognized striker - shows just how willing the man in charge has been to make wholesale changes to not only his sides setup, but to the movement and posture of his selected lineups. While Pep answered the hypothetical question of which striker to start in midweek with, “ neither, ” today he replied, “ both. ” Gabriel Jesus returned to the lineup, set up as a nominal left winger, but functioning as a sort of left-channel false-nine alongside Sergio Aguero, who served as a more central striker. Riyad Mahrez rounded out the attacking three on the right wing. Overall todays formation looked something like this in attack, with the formation typically tilted to the right. City attacking in a 2-1-4-3 formation. Kevin De Bruyne was given a largely free role, as he so often is, and he could be found dropping deep to serve as a second outlet against the press, sitting just ahead of Rodri in the build up, popping up on the right wing to deliver crosses, working the right channel to set up chances for Aguero, or marauding through midfield. When defending, and its worth noting that they did very little defending in the classical sense, the side would press in a 4-2-3-1 formation. On the rare occasion that Villa did manage to get a moment of sustained possession in City's half, the deep block became a 4-5-1. City pressing in the 4-2-3-1 Of note, David Silva whos advancing age might suggest hed struggle in such an up-tempo defense, made a number of savvy moves to win the ball back in dangerous areas, none more impactful than his interjection on Danny Drinkwater in the Villa area, which promptly fell to Mahrez, who slotted home both his, and Citys second. Overall, it was yet another dominant performance for City, and yet another feather in what is quickly becoming an ornately festooned cap for Guardiola. He may not win any awards for best manager this season as Jurgen Klopps all-conquering Liverpool side steamroll the Premier League, but this is undoubtedly Peps finest work since joining the club. 3) King Kun: Power, Balance, Strength, And Composure. Making The Impossible, Ordinary. The man, the myth, the legend. As general rule of thumb I try and avoid using this space as a place to rave about the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero. All three have been covered so extensively, and for so long elsewhere that it generally feels like there is little left to add. Instead, I try and reserve this as a place to discuss things that you may have missed, or to touch on concepts that arent so frequently mentioned, or players worthy of greater consideration. Today I break from convention to take a moment to appreciate the greatness of Sergio Aguero. One could wax lyrical about him for an hour, but I am neither skilled enough nor ambitious enough to do him such service. Instead, Ill simply touch on each goal, as any of them alone are enough to highlight different aspects of just what makes him not only a City legend, but a Premier League icon. The First: Raw Power His opening goal of the match, Citys third, starts with him positioned centrally, nearly 33 yards from Villas net. As De Bruyne moves to find a pocket of space in the deep-right channel, he receives the ball from Joao Cancelo, and immediately turns past Danny Drinkwater before driving toward a retreating Kortney Hause, Villas left-sided centerback. Just before the gap is closed he lays the ball off to Aguero whos running alongside De Bruyne to his left. At this point hes still thirty yards from goal, and former City hopeful Douglas Luiz has just tried, and failed, to intervene. Aguero brings the ball under his spell and drives at the gap between Huase and Tyrone Mings. to his left is Gabriel Jesus, but hes double marked, in front of him and slightly to his left he has De Bruyne, whos run has carried him past the Argentine. None of it matters. As Mings chooses to retreat instead of step out to engage, Aguero has eyes only for goal. As he reaches the twenty yard mark, and not having been closed down, he puts his entire body behind the ball and lets fly. Let it be said now that Sergio Aguero is not a subtle player. Part of what makes him so enjoyable, and such a fan favorite is that there is so little about his game that needs to be explained. Hes not big, and hes never been Leroy-Sane -fast. He doesnt have the passing vision or skill of De Bruyne, the feathery touch of David, the footwork of Riyad Mahrez, or the relentless pressing of Jesus. He doesnt need any of that. As Aguero shoots, his entire body is released from the confines of the Earth. It may look simplistic - hit ball hard - but it takes a great deal of technique to hit a ball with that kind of force, on the run, and not have it sail wildly off course. Generally speaking, when you opt for power, you sacrifice precision. Thats often not the case for Aguero. It certainly isnt here. While the shot isnt perfectly placed, its hit so hard, and with enough dip, that Villas goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland, is helpless to intervene. Though he does well to get his hand to it, there are few men on Earth who wouldve had the strength to push the shot wide, and as it buckles his wrist, we have confirmation that he is not one of them. The goal is Agueros 175th, drawing him level with Arsenals legendary, Thierry Henry, long considered the greatest foreign player of the Premier League era, and until today, the leading foreign-born scorer in English history. The Second: Balance, Strength, Composure Agueros second goal will start from the same source as the first: with Kevin De Bruyne triggering the attacking action. Once again, De Bruyne receives the ball in the deep-right-channel and hes free to run into acres of space. Ahead of him to his right, he could lay the ball into Mahrez. Instead he spots David Silva running through the middle in space and plays a very similar ball to the one hed assisted Gabriel Jesus goal with earlier in the match - bending the ball round Danny Drinkwater whos running through the middle, marking absolutely no one at all. The ball arrives into the feet of Silva who can run onto the ball in stride. Directly ahead of Silva is Aguero, whos run into the small gap between Ezri Konsa, Villas right-sided center back and their right wingback, Ahmed El Mohamady. As Mohamady squeezes in, it leaves Jesus unmarked out wide, but, just as De Bruyne eschewed the easy pass to Mahrez moments before, Citys Spanish magician is about to thread the needle to get the ball into the feet of Aguero. The ball arrives into Agueros feet right on the edge of the area. Its an awkward pass to try and control, and while it may look a little clumsy, he does exceptionally well to control it, with his first touch doing just enough to take some of the sting out of the pass. He uses his second touch to cut the ball into the middle, and while Tyrone Mings does well to stay in front of him, Konsa clumsily tries to win the ball back from behind, while Aguero uses his strength to shield the ball, and his balance to stay upright. As the ball runs Aguero takes the half second available to him as Mings fails to close him down, spots the open left corner of the Villa goal and uses his third touch to calmly pass the ball into the net. The goal is Agueros 176th, taking him ahead of Henry and into sole possession of fifth place on the list of most Premier League goals. The Third: The Classic Aguero Goal You know youre a truly great goal-scorer when you reach the point in your career when you have an identifiable goal. One that youve not only scored enough times for people to associate you with it, but thats so unique no one else could be. Such is the case with Aguero and the near-post, tight-angle, right-side-of-goal finish. If youre a City supporter youve seen him tally on this exact goal dozens of times. Its an absurd goal to have made his own if only because its so impossible to think you could ever score from that spot in the first place. The angle from which the shot is released, and the fact that any keeper worthy of the name should have the near post thoroughly covered, means that most attacking players wouldnt even consider it, theyd just pull the ball back line any other sane human being. But Aguero is not like most human beings. In this case City are on the press and Mahrez cuts out a pass in the attacking third and immediately plays in Aguero whos in acres of space only twenty two yards from goal. Aguero through on goal, a terrifying sight for opposing supporters As he takes the ball and drives into the area Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba races back to try and challenge. Just before he arrives, Aguero puts his boot through the ball and, just as hes done so many times before, drives the shot hard to the near post, right at the height of Nylands head. Theres nothing the keeper can do, and the ball is past him almost before his brain can relay the information to his body that the shot has been taken. The goal is Agueros 177th, and draws him level with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard for forth place in the history of the Premier League. It also rounds off his twelfth Premier League hat-trick, a new league record, and one more than Newcastle legend Alan Shearers eleven. Why bother trying to be poetic when the man writes his own sonnets with his feet? 4) Mahrez Dominant In the eye's of many City supporters Riyad Mahrez's season has been one of ups and downs as he started the season strong, tallying ten goal involvements - three goals and seven assists - in all competitions in the season's opening two months. He did all of that in just 578 total minutes played, a stunning rate of one involvement every 58 minutes. He then went comparatively cold, with only six goal involvements - three goals and three assists - over the better part of the next three months. During that time he played 865 minutes, leaving him with a rate of involvement of one every 144 minutes. It's worth noting that this is still a phenomenal return for any player, especially one who plays primarily on the wing, but when compared to his early performance (which was never sustainable) and given that it largely coincided with City's early struggles, it was easy to mark him out as having dipped in form. What's worth noting however is that of City's five Premier League losses, Mahrez has played only 147 of the 450 available minutes, making just two starts, both against Wolves, and both times being subbed off before sixth minutes had been played. Clearly even though Mahrez's output may have dipped, it wasn't he who was to blame. If anything, perhaps it was his absence that contributed to City's struggles. One thing we can almost certainly say contributed to his declining midseason output was the fact that Guardiola's early season tactics frequently left him largely isolated on the right wing with little to no support from Kyle Walker, who mostly sat deep alongside Rodri. Often times the right wing of City's attack became something of a black hole, something I delve into in some depth in this post, and Mahrez was left to try and dribble past two or three players by himself in order to create any kind of threat on his side of the pitch. Perhaps it should come as no surprise then that since the Sheffield United match - the first where Guardiola adopted his three man back line - Mahrez's production has once again soared. Since then, and including that match, City have played times, with Mahrez starting four of those affairs and in those matches Mahrez has contributed three more goals and three more assists, with half of that output coming in yesterday's match. Those six goal involvements in only 357 minutes is has returned him to his early-season output, with a goal involvement once every 59. 5 minutes. On the season Mahrez has tallied nine goals and thirteen assists in all competitions, for an almost unbelievable output of one goal involvement every 83. 2 minutes. At times it's almost hard to believe this is the same player who, for much of last season, looked completely out of place in this City side. Though many may have questioned City's financial outlay for a player many saw as a luxury signing, and many questioned his fit in this City side - myself included - surely no one is still left unconvinced of the value that Mahrez can provide a side when afforded the space and support necessary. It's taken the player time to adapt to the demands of the system, and the manager time to adapt to the needs of the player, but everyone is benefitting now. 5) Stones Impact Roughly a week and a half ago I penned a deep dive for this space focusing on exactly how and why the absence of Aymeric Laporte has been felt to profoundly this season. Within that piece I wrote the following. When healthy Stones is likely City's (second) best centerback. He's not as fast as Laporte, but he's faster than any of City's other options, and while he's not nearly the ball winner or aerial presence that Laporte is, he's generally good enough to at least deny the easy route to goal that Otamendi so frequently gifts the opposition. He also has the size and strength to be more impactful on set pieces than Fernandinho or Garcia. The problem over the past three years has simply been finding him a purple patch of health, and all of the ins and outs have left him both out of form and out of confidence. While we've yet to see him tested against elite pace or attacking skill (he sat out the Manchester United match, having played only three days earlier in his first match back from injury) today offered yet another glimpse of exactly why he's valuable. While he has weaknesses - namely, that he's not a skilled ball winner - his strengths, especially when paired alongside an elite ball-winner like Laporte, really shine. While Tom Pope and the internet may have done his part to turn Stones into a meme in the aftermath of City's matchup with Port Vale, the truth is that Stones was excellent in that match. He ran down every ball in his channel, won tackles, won headers, and generally dominated Pope every time the two met on the pitch (Pope's goal came when he beat 17 year old Taylor Harwood-Bellis to a cross. Stones wasn't as good today and he made a pair of mistakes that in another match, against a more talented side, could cost his team goals. Once he was beat after mis-reading a one-two between Jack Grealish and El Ghazi near the halfway line, and another time he took a page from Nicolas Otamendi, attempting a reckless sliding tackle against El Ghazi on the right touchline fifty yards from goal, and missed completely, giving the Villa striker a chance to run at City's backline. In both instance's his pace allowed him to get back into the play, and stunningly, it was his intervention that took the ball of El Ghazi in the latter. It's that ability to recover from a mistake (and the fact that he makes far fewer of them) that helps separate him from his Argentine compatriot. And during the rest of the match, we could see how his physical qualities give him an edge over Guardiola's other backline options. There was one moment in particular, at 11:48 where Fernandinho gets beat for pace by a long ball into his channel. Stones however was fast enough to come from behind El Ghazi, who had inside position and a clear run onto the pass and still beat him to the ball, calmly and cooly intercepting the pass which, had it not been for his intervention, would've left the Villa striker through on goal with only Ederson to beat. That kind of pace cannot be taught, and it's something that the rest of City's backline options lack to varying degrees. It's also essential in a system like Guardiola's where the centerbacks are asked to play extremely high up the pitch, often operating in tandem in the opposition's half of the pitch. Stones is also both taller, and bigger than either Fernandinho or Eric Garcia, both of whom are, to varying degrees, liabilities on set pieces. Though Stones is not an elite aerial presence, he still represents a better option to either player. In his past two matches he has repeatedly stepped out of his partnership with Fernandinho whenever there was a header to be contested, and he's won nearly every engagement. Stones is not a perfect player, and his occasional mistake, as well as his tendency to shy away from a challenge can be massively frustrating to those wanting a more traditionally English centerback. But his physical gifts, along with his generally consistent and fundamentally sound approach make him, in my opinion, City's most comprehensive option when paired next to Aymeric Laporte. Bits and Bobs 1) Though I'm an ardent advocate for Gabriel Jesus, today is one of those matches where we're reminded that he is still a work in progress. Overall his performance today was superb ( gave him an 8. 83 rating, good for the 4th best performance of the week in the Premier League) but his finishing was put into sharp relief as it was paired side by side to the man he'll one day be asked to replace in Sergio Aguero. While Aguero could've had a couple more goals himself, his finishing was just that tiny bit more clinical, and it was his ability to finish his half chances that ensured he ended with a hat-trick, while Jesus ended with just the one. How you view his performance today will likely be colored by your preconceived notions of the type of player he is. For those who're inclined to believe that he'll never be able to replace Aguero, and that City will need to look outside for a replacement, today was confirmation of that. Presented with a pair of half chances that he couldn't convert (though he did well with both) and a golden opportunity at the back post that he flashed wide, he let his chance at his own hat trick go begging. For those who appreciate all the other things he does, you'll likely be pleased as he dominated the match in the press, leading City in headers won (5) and harassing his man into five turnovers while completing 87% of his 62 passes, many of which were of the incisive variety. It's also possible to see Jesus' misses in another light. And for those who may question the competitions in which he's scoring these goals and providing these assists, it's worth highlighting that with thirteen goals and six assists in 1, 409 minutes in the Champions League and Premier League, his goal involvement rate in those two competitions actually stands at a breath-taking one for every 74. 2 minutes played. 2) Danny Drinkwater is really shite at football. For City's 4th he's once again left chasing De Bruyne after once again being too slow to recover his position, giving De Bruyne plenty of green grass to run into before his cross cuts out the entire Villa back line. For City's 5th he's caught in no-mans land with De Bruyne running free on the right, and David Silva running free through the middle. In the end De Bruyne bends a ball round him to spring Silva, who threads a pass into Aguero for the Argentinian's second. That this was the least egregious of his goal-related moments today speaks volumes about how bad he was. Indeed, there were at least four other moments that I could count where City had an opportunity on goal that was directly related to one sort of gross incompetence or another. This may have been the single worst performance from a midfielder that I've seen all season. It may have been the worst I've seen in years. This was less disaster-class, and more Keystone Kops. gave his performance a 4. 95, further proving that while statistics can be useful, they can also be flawed. This was the first match I've ever seen where I would've given someone a zero, and I don't even know if that's possible. If he's allowed to play another match the Villa faithful will be well within their rights to question the competence of Dean Smith. While the club are struggling with a number of injuries, surely they can find someone better than this. There were times Drinkwater genuinely looked as though he were perhaps a rather avid Sunday League player rather than an experienced Premier League player. It's not an exaggeration to say that most clubs have youth players who could step in and play better than he did today. Awful. You shouldnt neglect any of the 3 main modes if you want to be successful. Solo - This is the mode that will be your first step towards not relying on others for your decisions/ choice you make falls on nobodies shoulders but your own. You must succeed. You must build. You must choose which enemy to take out in a given situation. At the end, only you can get yourself that sweet sweet Victory Royale. Duos/Squads - These are the modes that will teach you team based skills. When playing with teammates, you need to work in unison towards each and every goal. Nobody likes that one guy who runs ahead of everyone because hes hot headed and thinks he doesnt need anyone ends up getting knocked in battle to far to be picked up and rage t be that guy. More info on team tactics to come farther down. Creative/Playground - This is the mode you want to play by yourself or with a friend, to work on building/editing routines so they happen effortlessly in emergency situations. Any time you see or get killed by a technique on the battlefield that inspires/enrages/befuddles you, this is the mode you come to to figure it out, and potentially improve upon it, and then implement it in your own personal technique. Team Rumble - This mode in where you want to go to learn how to firefight successfully, or to complete challenges that are extra hard to accomplish in modes with a single life. Its a great place to warm up before diving into the other modes as well. Due to the constant engagements youll be in and infinite lives at your disposal, it gives you countless opportunities use your weapon out at various distances and scenarios. I do not consider this mode good training for anything else, as it is too relaxed and without heavy consequence for bad choices. Duo [no fill. This will teach you how to not rely on teammates while up against multiple enemies at a time. You will be forced to time engagements with enemies to have the highest chance of success. To do this alone, you must ‘divide and conquer. If you see 2 fully alert people and you rush them, you are going to be dealing with them both at once at different angles. Your goal is to catch them off guard. You see a guy slacking behind his teammate harvesting/someone just found a 50pot/medkit and is about to take it/two people are dancing together like they arent on a out whichever one is the obvious team leader out of the two if possible (The cocky one/the hyper builder/the edit pro/the one jumping not crouching. not just take out whoevers available, and then treat it like any old solo skirmish. Use the downed teammate to your advantage if possible as bate/false hope or something. If you knock them and can safely pick them up, you can throw them somewhere that will be hard to get to and make it harder for your enemy. A crushed spirit is one thats easy to overcome. Squad [no fill. Mastery of this is how you become elite in the game. This requires a playing style very similar to Duo [no-fill] except with a need to be more often aggressive and fearless. ‘Divide and Conquer is still the key to success here. You need to be very well versed in BUILDING TACTICS before you try this out with any hope of succeeding. You also need to make sure you are a dead-shot by the time you try this. Headshots should be something you routinely strive to hit, and use AIMING TACTICS to ensure a high rate of success in getting them. AIMING TACTICS will be expanded upon further down. Once you dont fear any amount of will almost look forward to them knocking your teammates for the adrenaline boost (high) you get from overcoming a situation lol. 3. SPOTTING Enemy Team Leader - In duo or squad mode, one of the many keys to success that stands out, is the ability to spot who the team leader is for any given group of enemies. This is the highest value target, they must be eliminated FIRST, and as swiftly and cleanly as possible (aka headshot snipe. You can spot this person by their aggressive tendencies with building/editing/shooting/and even just general movement compared to the group they are in. The team leader will often be out front of the pack, and the first person to engage you in a battle. Nobody wants to hear the team leader yell at them because they shot to early and gave everyone wait for his note. Once the team leader is down, in most cases the rest of the team will often panic, and go on a full defensive to get him up as quickly as cause without the one they all rely on, they tend to start losing hope. This person more often than not also values themselves over everyone else as well and will have them prioritize reviving them. Use this to your advantage. and while hes stressing them out, this is when you bring out the explosives and make life hell for the remaining enemy let them stop panicking. (This is just a single scenario, and isnt how its going to work against a team that has more than one capable person in play, adapt accordingly) Snipers - Learn how to spot snipers, then learn how to trick them. You can always spot a sniper both by the length of the weapon the are holding, their movement or rather lack there of, their position (crouched, partially sticking out of the side of a low seemingly innocuous wall not moving a muscle) or by the fact that they appear to be looking you right in the eyes from another mountaintop. Upon spotting a sniper, immediately alert your teammates and try to eliminate ASAP. Tricking them is a tough logic to explain, but basically it comes down to predicting them while being unpredictable yourself. Use third person to your advantage or ramp/roof edits to see through straight to the enemies. DO NOT POKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAME PLACE TWICE IN A FIREFIGHT, OR EVEN TO LOOK FOR them beaded onto a spot they are sure you will pop out of, and then change to a spot where ideally you think you would least expect someone to pop out and snipe you if you were be quick. Didnt work/didnt knock them? CHANGE to a 3rd position, then a 4th, will psychologically annihilate them. Enemy RPG - As with snipers, you need to be able to spot the guy with the rpg ASAP as well as what type of rpg he has to gauge danger (uncommon/rare RPG has different shape/sound than the epic/legendary variety) warn others immediately, and take RPG guy out FIRST in almost any situation if possible. If thats not possible, you need to have enough mats to reverse build (jump backwards while spamming alternating ramps/walls/ceilings in front of you, and put as many mats between you and them to destroy as possible to keep yourself/ teammates safe from blast. This is also how you will exhaust/waste their rocket supply. Count 13 rockets and they are out of ammo. It only takes one wooden panel to keep you from a that knowledge to get right up to a person who is dead set on killing you with a rocket to blow it up in their face with a wall or ceiling. Know the timing between plan for the fastest reload unless you know otherwise for it to whatever advantage you have at the time. Note that even though it only takes one panel to block a can still shoot beside you and hit you if theres no cover. You need to stop fearing rocket launchers (especially you people who get so frustrated that you start demanding they be vaulted. should help. Fear/Panic - You need to know the difference between when someone fears you, when they are flat out panicking, and when they are luring you into a trap. When someone fears you they will often visibly show it in how they build/move. Never let their mind stop racing by being relentless. Fear is your worst enemy, yet a valuable tool to utilize. Use that knowledge to remain confident against a person on the full defensive against them exhaust themselves, and theyll be putty in your hands. Trickery - This is a hard thing to spot. Its more of a gut feeling than anything really. When someone is leading you into a house theyve been occupying during a battle, if it looks at all suspicious or looks like they are trying to funnel you to a spot to take the guesswork out of where to shoot, or if your trap senses start t take the bate. Build up and over them to the other side, smash through a wall, chuck grenades inside, or whatever is available to make a separate way to get to them and take away any planning or advantage they had. 4. BUILDING TACTICS (Work in progress) General Building - The MOST important factor to learn in the game Fortnite, is how to build. Building even basic structures will put you leagues above someone who doesnt. However, learning advanced building practices and logistics will take you beyond any average player. I will do my best to describe the process as I wont be adding pictures or videos. Might have to use your imagination, or just spot different tactics on the battle field, note their effectiveness, and apply them. Basic Building Tactics - The instant you decide to prepare for any engagement, it is my recommendation that your very FIRST action be to BUILD. In most firefights, you will want to place at minimum a stairway/wall in between you and your enemy/enemies to give yourself an immediate retreat should you need to evade incoming projectiles. If an enemy starts hammering your cover, you will need to switch to build mode and maintain your cover by placing more, until the enemy needs to reload. This gives you a chance to gain control of the situation. Learning to quickly build a boxed in ramp will make sure you are more protected from unexpected 3rd party shots. To do this successfully and quickly without losing your bearings, first place your ramp facing the enemy, get in the center of the ramp, switch to walls, aim straight down, and do a 360 spin full tilt while holding the wall button down. Since you placed the ramp first, you can re-orientate yourself instantly. Beware of places that can look down into your build, throw up extra cover in their direction to help prevent getting lasered. Need to heal? DO NOT STAND OUT IN THE OPEN. For basic healing, you will want to build a box around yourself. Upon finishing, ALWAYS use this time to train on door edits to get out. Never smash through walls unless you absolutely have to to survive. Get used to switching to different materials. When you are about to engage an enemy, or in the late phases of the storm when enemies are imminent, it is a good idea to switch from wood to a heavier available material. Brick is my preference for battles, only switching to steel to build structures when theres plenty of time for the steel to complete. Advanced Building Tactics. This section you will want to practice in Creative/Playground Mode for a low stress, fast paced, uninterrupted, focused learning experience, as well as in regular modes for real time train yourself to become fluid in your motions and thought process under pressure. The ability to quickly edit structures as second nature, can take you from being an advanced player, to an expert/pro player. Getting into a fight with a pro editor without knowledge of editing or counter measures there of, is almost certain death. The goal of this is to put you on the death dealing end. To practice edits, you will want to go into Creative/Playground and build a training ground for yourself. I usually find a flat area, build up a little, and then build the training area. Wall Edits. Adding a randomized zig zag to this, as well as randomizing the timing in between jumps will ensure that you give snipers a hard shot to pull off. You will also want to use your time in the air to look around while maintaining travel in the desired direction at full speed. A quick 90 degree flick left/right and back before you land, making sure to glance for enemy shapes or movement that might be coming up on your sides. Close Quarters - If you kill someone inside a building, and know their friend is going to come. Know that the friend will be telling them where you are most likely to t be there, be opposite and shoot them in the back of their unsuspecting heads. Also a great time to put a trap down if you know someones going to the friend didnt get hit with a trap and the other is to far to have heard have no warning other than their own situational that. Downed Teammate Stratagy - If youre teammate gets knocked in a build, know that the enemy wants them know that they potentially used all the steps mentioned above and are progressing to finish the job ASAP. They will assume often that you will stay right there and revive up enough panels to give them something to shoot at and suggest that you are staying to protect and your job is to pick them up, REMAIN UNSEEN, and bring them to the LAST PLACE you think the enemy is going to think youll possibly be while they still think you are there and are firing rockets/rounds to keep you held in place guarding your teammate. They will try to bring the whole place down to find you, but by then your teammates back up and you are one guard while they heal. Last Ditch Effort - SOMETIMES HEALING ISNT AN metimes you have to finish the job NOW. Do your best to pay attention to when this time arises, also pay attention when you fail as a result of not doing this. It comes up more often than you might realize. Timing - A major key to success across the board, is timing. Time EVERYTHING out in your head. Storm phases, travel time from point A to point B, time in between shots, personal reload times, enemy reload times, etc. In using a pump against a person with a tac shotgun, if you miss the first shot but they hit you, waiting for and lining up your next shot is probably going to get you killed 9/10 times. Knowing that an enemy will get a revive before you will on your teammate is vital info. Knowing that if you revive a teammate in the storm you will both die instead of just them is vital information. They should be understanding, dont let their crys sway have their whole lives to get over it lol. Mimicking Better Players- Lastly, if an enemy or a teammate does something that impresses/enrages/bewilders can too. Figure out what they did, go into creative if it was a build technique you want to reverse engineer, add it to your routine and use it against them or for your own advantage. If it looks efficient and logical, it was probably done on purpose. Record and watch replays to get the fine details and learn from others and also yourself.
